“Many veterans have received ‘less than honorable discharges,’ also known as bad papers, as a result of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), or Military Sexual Trauma (MST),” said Stanfield (R-8). “Too many veterans have been shamed and left without the federal benefits they earned. These veterans also lost their rights to state benefits. This bill will align New Jersey with several states that have passed similar laws, and help ensure that our veterans receive the state benefits and respect that they deserve.”

In recent virtual public meetings, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has floated the creation of permits for using the roads in Wharton State Forest.

In recent virtual public meetings, the NJ DEP has floated the creation of permits for using the roads in Wharton State Forest. District 8 lawmakers chastised the DEP for holding virtual meetings on such an important topic to the people of their district. (NJ Division of Parks & Forestry)

“Visitors and residents of the Pine Barrens have never had to pay to use the roads in Wharton State Forest and shouldn’t have to at any point moving forward,” said 8th Legislative District Senator Jean Stanfield. “This is government overreach and something that New Jersey residents already pay for with their highest-in-the-nation taxes.”

“The Senior Freeze provides needed property tax relief for older homeowners, including many who are struggling to make ends meet on fixed incomes,” said Stanfield (R-8). “Currently, seniors must wait for the Treasury to send out the checks by mail, which is a costly and inefficient process. My legislation will simplify the Senior Freeze by crediting property tax bills directly so seniors don’t have to wait months and months for a rebate check.”

“I am so proud that this legislation was signed into law today. Children of military service members face many unique responsibilities during their school years,” said Stanfield (R-8). “Between K-12, military children can move to different locations six to nine times, which separates them from family and friends as well as familiar social environments. This kind of upbringing means finding the right school is extremely important—and by designating certain educational institutions as ‘Purple Star Schools,’ we can call attention to schools that provide for the educational and social-emotional challenges military-connected students encounter.”

Editorial: Being Tough on Crime Means Helping Those Released from Prison to Move Forward

The following editorial by Senator Jean Stanfield (R-8) was published by NJ.com on July 28, 2022:

There’s an increasingly pervasive and inflexible thought process in our politics on crime these days, one that holds you’re only allowed to be tough on crime and sacrifice compassion or soft on crime and sacrifice safety. By failing to meet in the middle between those far-off stances, we not only fail to protect victims, but also the offenders who have a chance to be reformed.

In this NJ.com editorial, Sen. Jean Stanfield says reentry services and drug diversion programs can help reform offenders, prevent recidivism, and improve public safety. (Pixabay)

I’ve devoted my career to not only protecting people as the Sheriff of Burlington County but also working on getting people help once they do get caught up in the system. I currently serve roles on New Jersey’s Reentry program and the Supreme Court’s JOBS Committee, which help incarcerated people integrate back into society and help recovering drug offenders find careers, respectively.
